Bhabarpara is a village with an economy completely based
on agriculture.
After 1974, with the new chance of watering the fields with tube wells,
men had the possibility to work all through the year on three consequent
crops. Nevertheless the economic situation of the families could not be
considered normal. Sending the children to school, going to see the doctor
when somebody was ill, waiting a few years before marrying off your daughter
of thirteen were still privileges of rich families only.
In this situation started the handicraft activity.
A few NGO's present in Bangladesh organized training for women, and it
was a success. Women never had been given a chance before. And they took
this one very positively.
A problem was that everything was based mostly in Dhaka, the Capital.
It was easier to control a project from there and eventual buyers could
find you in no time.
The fathers working in Bhabarpara did their best to give the same chance
also to the women living in that area. The work they specialized in was
the preparation of jute Carpets (somebody could also say Floor Mats, but
they prefer the term Carpet). But now they master a big variety of articles.
