Charka is part of a national non-government organisation
based in Jessore, Bangladesh, called Jagorani Chakra. It functions as
a revenue-generating arm of the parent organisation. Jagorani Chakra's
work is focused on community development with the goal of self-sustainability.
Programmes include skill development, primary education, and training
in health and nutrition. Proceeds from Charka sales go to help support
development programmes of Jagorani Chakra organisation. Charka has its
own Retail Shop in Jessore town. Culturally, the women in Bangladesh are
discouraged from working both by their family and the society. Women who
find themselves in a situation in which they must earn money to survive
(abandoned, divorced or widowed women, wives with disabled husbands) find
little opportunity to do so. Charka gives an opportunity for work to women
of the community by offering work at home. There are eight working field
areas (villages), each consisting of a range of 6-40 women. Each area
is headed by a woman in her own village. She is responsible for inspecting
the quality of the pieces and taking work to and from the villages. Women
work in their spare time, around the household duties of their family.
They can contribute to their family's income while still providing care
for their husbands, children and extended family. Jagorani Chakra and
Charka are dedicated to the principles of fair trade, fair prices, clean
and safe working environments and self-empowerment.
